Meet Alex
I’ve spent over 30 years building and leading businesses in financial services — starting in the North of England and growing ventures that have gone on to have a national impact.
In 2004, I founded 1st Stop, which became Oplo, with a simple goal: to build a lender that treated customers fairly and put people at the heart of finance. Over 15 years, we grew from a small regional firm into one of the UK’s leading consumer lenders. In 2022, Oplo came together with Tandem Bank, where I became CEO, helping to build what we called the UK’s fairer, greener bank.
Today, Tandem is one of Blackpool’s biggest employers and a major contributor to the North West economy, something I’m immensely proud of as a Northern founder who believes deeply in the region’s untapped potential.
After stepping back from corporate life, I knew I wanted to keep building, just differently. FabCap was born from that desire: to work with like-minded people, ready to embark on their own entrepreneurial journey, sharing the highs and lows that inevitably follow. I wanted to back the next generation of builders.
I’ve lived through booms, busts and everything in between and one thing’s clear — builders beat dreamers. Dreamers sometimes win big, but builders win more often. That’s why I back founders with real-world experience, solving real problems and giving it everything to build something that endures.

Why We Invested: After building Oplo from scratch into one of the UK’s leading consumer lenders, Alex backed the merger with Tandem to create a greener, fairer digital bank. It was the natural next step in his journey from intrapreneur, to entrepreneur, to investor — and a chance to support a purpose-driven challenger at scale.

Helping Consumers manage their debt in an accessible and sustainable way
Why We Invested: After reaching C-suite roles in major debt-purchasing firms, Craig and the team knew the sector needed a digital-first challenger. With incumbents constrained by old systems and limited capital, they set out to build something smarter and more agile. We invested because they had the experience, the timing and the execution mindset.
Financial Cloud
A flexible and scalable SaaS FS&Banking platform. The Salesforce of Financial Services, simply better!
Why We Invested: Kyle and Grant had worked for a large Debt purchase and collection business for over 10 years. Uniquely they understood the industry and how legacy technology holds a business back. They had the vision to build a financial SaaS platform from the ground up in an industry they truly understood.
RedKite
Funding Regional Developers improve their communities, housing and commercial property
Why We Invested: Jake and Lee are a great example of what FabCap looks for. Two founders with a solid career to Director level in Property lending at Shawbrook Bank keen to start on their own, switching from Intrapreneurs to Entrepreneurs supported with capital and experience from FabCap.
Clearwater Fisheries
The North Wests Premier carp and course fishery with 10 lakes over 50 acres managed by Michael Pennington.
Why We Invested: The North West lacked a premier, large-scale destination that combined elite angling with professional management. This insight drove the acquisition of the 50-acre Carnforth site, transforming raw land into a diverse 10-lake complex. By scaling the facility's infrastructure, we have created a high-yield leisure asset where the increasing valuation of the land and fishing stock allows for consistent reinvestment, ensuring the site remains the region's leading fishery while funding future expansions.
SRE Capital
Solar contract installations through Power Purchase Agreements, backed by Pollen Street Capital's £300m facility.
Why We Invested: Dave Wills the founder and CEO had built a 200m pipeline of solar contract installations in the form of Power Purchase Agreements. After working with a big four accountancy firm, FabCap was approached for support on raising a debt line and an investment for working capital. FabCap was able to bring Pollen Street Capital in for 300m facility and injected equity for working capital.
Clear Property NW
A mix of Residential and Commercial Development properties developed then sold.
Why We Invested: As Alex's businesses grew it seemed sensible to own the properties his companies operated from rather than owning them. This simple logic started a wider journey of identifying properties that can be purchased, converted and leased, creating equity which can be refinanced into the next opportunity building a growing portfolio of buildings financed from the same initial investment made in 2016.
